Google on Thursday announced its intention to open its very first physical store in New York this year, which should allow the Californian giant to advance its pawns in the competition with Apple in the field of consumer electronics.

The store, which will be called the Google Store, will open this summer in the Chelsea district, where there are already large offices frequented by Google employees.

“Customers will be able to browse the Google Store and purchase a wide selection of products made by Google, ranging from Pixel phones to Nest products, Fitbit devices to Pixelbooks and more,” said the Google vice president. Jason Rosenthal in a blog post.

“They will also be able to do their shopping online on GoogleStore.com and collect their orders in store,” he said.

The announcement comes as the search engine giant looks to compete with Apple in the sale of computer hardware, whether it's smartphones or thermostats and smoke detectors.

Google also wants to capitalize on the sales of connected objects for physical activities of the Fitbit brand, which it acquired in November 2019.

“The new Google Store is an important step in our product strategy to deliver the most useful Google experience anywhere, anytime,” said Rosenthal.

Via its global Apple Store network, which has more than 500 stores in 25 countries, the Apple brand sells a large part of its iPhones, iPads and MacBooks in stores.

Microsoft, on the other hand, announced last year the permanent closure of almost all of its stores, with the bulk of its sales now being done online.
